Jan Matejko, 1838-1893

A was Polish painter, who represents the 19th century of polish painting.

From 1852 to 1858 Matejko studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow under Wojciech Korneli Stattler and Wadysaw Luszczkiewicz.

After studying under the history painter Hermann Anschütz in Munich (1859) and then briefly and less successfully in Vienna, Matejko returned to Krakow, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Beginning in 1873, he was for many years the principal of the School of Fine Arts.

Since 1904 he has a section in the National Museum in Krakow called Dom Jana Matejki.

Matejko is well known for his historical and batalistic works like Battle of Grunwald and portraits of Polish kings.

Jan Matejko created many woodcuts based on his own drawings. He created illustrations depicting historical figures and buildings.

Kraków Academy of Fine Arts named after Matejko in 1979, where he served as president of many years.
